About us · biodynamic since 1980

Demeter farm in Carinthia, Austria

Since 1980 we have farmed Demeterhof Kraindorf near St. Veit an der Glan biodynamically according to the Demeter standards – now in the third generation. You can taste what that means in our bread, our milk and our cheese.

Biodynamic since 1980

Since 1980 we have run our biodynamic family farm according to the Demeter standards and the insights of Rudolf Steiner. Day by day we try to live in harmony with the people and animals around us and to care for and honour our soil – so that future generations can live from it too.

Animals, plants and soil as a whole

Rudolf Steiner speaks of “qualitative analysis”: the greatest possible food quality arises from plants and animals living together on one farm. The animals eat what the earth provides, and give back the manure that feeds the soil again. That is why cows, pigs, hens, horses and donkeys are as much part of our farm as fields, meadows and forests.

Cows with horns and lots of pasture

As the Demeter standards require, our cows keep their horns. From the beginning of May to the end of October they spend the whole day on the pasture. Lush grasses and herbs give the milk, the butter and the cheese their incomparable flavour. Mmmmhhhh!

From the field to your bread

Our semolina and bread flours are milled in the farm’s own stone mill – and of course we process the grain gently and without any synthetic substances. Our dairy produces yoghurt, Glundner cheese, quark, sour cream, cream cheese and butter.

Tradition and innovation

We are the third generation to run our Demeter farm in Kraindorf. For more than a hundred years the estate, with its wide fields, meadows and forests, has been owned by our family. And because we are already thinking of tomorrow, we keep bringing tradition and innovation together into a thriving whole.

Frequently asked questions

What does Demeter mean?

Demeter is the brand of biodynamic agriculture, which goes back to the insights of Rudolf Steiner. Farm, animals and plants are seen as a whole – and the standards go beyond the EU organic regulation.

Since when has your farm been Demeter?

Since 1980 we have run our biodynamic family farm according to the Demeter standards. The farm has been owned by our family for more than a hundred years.

Who inspects this?

Our organic inspection body is BIOS (AT-BIO-401) – you will find the EU organic logo and the Demeter seal at the bottom of every page.

Where can I buy your Demeter products?

In the farm shop at the farm, at the self-service farm stall on the road to the farm (every day, around the clock) and on Saturdays at the St. Veit farmers’ market.
